1) ATTACHMENT
Question: Attachment brings about a kind of emotional exchange, a human warmth, which seems a fundamental need. Detachment produces coldness, lack of affection, a break in relationship; it can also deeply hurt others. Something seems to be wrong with this approach. What do you say?

The word 'attach' means to cling, to hold, to have the feeling that you belong to somebody and that somebody belongs to you. Cultivating detachment breeds lack of affection, a coldness, a break in relationship; it is the cultivation of the opposite. Naturally it will. If detachment is the opposite of attachment, then that detachment is an idea, a concept, a conclusion that thought has brought about as a result of realising that attachment produces a lot of trouble, a lot of conflict, jealousy and anxiety. So thought says, "It is much better to be detached."

Detachment is a non-fact, whereas attachment is a fact. When there is attachment, to cultivate detachment is a movement towards illusion and in that illusion you become cold, hard, bitter, isolated without any sense of affection. That is what we are all doing: living in non-fact.

Can you face the fact that you are attached-not only to a person, to an idea, to a belief, but to your own experiences, which is much more dangerous? Your own experiences give you a sense of excitement, a sense of being alive.

If one is aware that one is attached one sees all the consequences of that attachment - anxiety, lack of freedom, jealously, anger, hatred. In attachment there is also a sense of safety, a sense of stability, a sense of being guarded, protected. And so there is the possessor and the possessed and hence there must be jealousy, anxiety, fear and all the rest. Now, do you see the consequences of all that-not the description of it but the actuality of it? I am attached to you out of my loneliness and that attachment, arising from loneliness, says, "I love you". I feel a communion because you are also in the same position. Two people clinging to each other out of their loneliness,  out of their depression, out of their unhappiness. So what happens?

I am clinging not to you, but to the idea, to something which will help me to escape from myself.

You may be attached to an experience, to an incident, which has given you great excitement, a great sense of elation, a sense of power, a sense of safety and you are clinging to that. That experience, which you have had, what is it? That experience is registered in the mind and you hold it. That something you are holding on to is dead and you also are becoming dead. If you see all this, without any direction, without any motive, just observe it, then you will see that insight shows the whole thing as on a map. When once there is that insight the thing disappears completely, you are not attached.

2) THE QUEST FOUNDATION facilitates activities that encourage free
reflection and inquiry into issues which steer and shape our outer and inner lives, and in turn, our society. And because today's world is what we have made of it, it is possible that a deeper understanding of ourselves will lead to a more compassionate, humane and responsible society.

The Quest Foundation's objectives are inspired by the teachings of J Krishnamurti (1895-1986), widely regarded as one of the greatest religious teachers of our times. With indisputable logic and lucidity, his unique approach unravels the nature of problems of daily living that bind man to a mediocre existence; and in doing so, he confronts us with the challenge to change.

The Foundation's range of activities centre round three concerns:
- Bringing people together in a shared exploration into the workings of the mind through reflection, dialogue, study and retreat.
- Translation of Krishnamurti's works into Thai & their dissemination across the country.
- Creation of a Forum for New Education to explore holistic learning.

3) "THE POSSIBILITY OF CHANGE" - PIRONGIA RETREAT APRIL 2004
"Has humanity taken a wrong turn, which has brought about this endless division, conflict and destruction?"
"Thought cannot solve human problems, for thought itself is the problem."
"We are the world. To change the world, we must change ourselves."
J. Krishnamurti (1875-1986)

A gathering/retreat is being arranged for all those interested in self-enquiry, and also the work of the late J. Krishnamurti, at:
Pirongia Lodge
South Waikato
9-13th April 2004
(Easter Holidays)

Pirongia Lodge is situated at the edge of prime native bush, half way up Pirongia Mountain. There are many varied walks and fine views. Details of the lodge can be found at http://www.geocities.com/pfplodge/index.html

Books, audio tapes, CDs and videos of the talks and dialogues of Krishnamurti will be freely available for private study and as a basis for communal enquiry. No doubt informal and formal dialogue will play their part in the retreat, but the desire for silence will certainly be respected and catered for. The price will be around $30-$35 per night inclusive, depending on numbers. This includes all food (vegetarian). Travel assistance can be given to those arriving by air (the nearest airport is at Hamilton city).

To register your attendance ($30 deposit required), or for further details, contact:

4) THE LENDING LIBRARY
We are fortunate that for decades Krishnamurti's talks and dialogues have been recorded on audio tape, and after 1968, on video. To actually listen to him speaking adds an extra dimension to the printed words, important as these are. One can feel the depth of his feeling, his passion, his deep concern for the human race.

Future issues of the newsletter will carry brief outlines of videos, audio tapes and books from the libraries.

AUDIOTAPES
"Is there an alternative to our present way of living?"
"What have you done with your life?"
"The 'me' paints on a vast canvas and pretends it is making tremendous designs."
"Thought has created this world."

These are just a few of the titles in the Krishnamurti Audio Tape library. The collection now contains some 130 tapes, under such categories as "Selected Talks", "Discussions with Scientists and Scholars", "Questions and Answers", etc.
Many of Krishnamurti's tapes are also in the book library. For example, there is a 15 cassette collection which was published as "The Ending of Time". This is a dialogue, mostly with Professor David Bohm, which took place during 1980 in various locations.

Cost: Tapes are $2 each plus postage.

BOOK LIBRARY
"For those who wish to listen, this book will have a value beyond words"
 - The UK Observer of "The First and Last Freedom"

Some 70 books are available, covering a publishing history from 1934 to the present time. Krishnamurti's concerns from the beginning have always been the fundamental ones of life, death, love, conflict, religion, freedom, etc. and these issues are reflected in all his books. The Library collection encompasses his recorded talks, his own journals, his conversations with ordinary people, dialogues with scientists, scholars, teachers and students, and so on.
There are many classic titles such as "The Urgency of Change", "The Only Revolution", "Freedom from the Known", "Commentaries on Living". There are theme books including "On Love and Loneliness", "Meeting Life". There are books about Krishnamurti himself, e.g. "The Years of Awakening", "The Transparent Mind". And many more.

Cost: The cost of borrowing is the postage only.
